Self-discipline is defined as the correction or regulation of oneself for the sake of improvement, basically, the ability to make yourself do things that should be done, known as “will-power”; the control of your impulses and actions. It also means cultivating a mindset whereby you are ruled by your deliberate choices rather than by your emotions, bad habits, or the sway of others. Self discipline to me means; cultivating exceptional habits that transform today’s actions into tomorrow’s results, because between striving and arriving, your success is determined by your ability to discipline yourself. I believe Mary Rennault encapsulates this well with her quote, “It’s not what one is, it’s what one does with it.” No personal success, achievement, or goal, can be realized without self-discipline. It is singularly the most important attribute needed to achieve any type of personal excellence.
The noun self-discipline describes the necessary mental strength that is required to control one’s behaviors, feelings and desires. If one is self disciplined, it indicates that one’s feelings and desires are under control. I think Napoleon Hill states this best when he said, “Self-discipline begins with the mastery of your thoughts. If you don’t control what you think, you can’t control what you do. Simply, self-discipline enables you to think first and act afterward.”
Self-discipline appears in various forms, such as perseverance, restraint, endurance, thinking before acting, finishing what you start, the ability to carry out one’s decisions and plans, in spite of inconvenience, hardships or obstacles, exercising your self-control, enabling you to avoid unhealthy excesses of anything that could lead to negative consequences. It also shows that one is able to motivate oneself to tackle the tasks and problems that need to be addressed.
One of the main characteristics of self-discipline is the ability to forgo instant and immediate gratification and pleasure, in favor of some greater gain or more satisfying results, even if this requires effort and time. Basically, it is the expression of inner strength and staying power, vital for dealing with the affairs of daily life and for the achieving of goals. When combined with will-power it can help you overcome laziness, procrastination and indecisiveness. These skills make it possible to take action and persevere with it, even if the action is unpleasant and requires effort.
Imagine how different your life would be if you had iron-clad willpower? More and more scientists agree that your success is directly determined by your inner drive. The good news is, nobody’s self-discipline is permanently set. You do have the power to dramatically improve your self-control, and therefore, your entire life path.
Having said all of this, for me, self-discipline means deliberately aligning our energy with our values and priorities, thereby achieving success in our lives!
