Fear Is An Illusion

Fear is defined as an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm. The word “fear” can be thought of as an acronym that translates to False Expectations Appearing Real.  In other words, we look at what we imagine to be a strong reason to believe that something will happen, and then we allow it to become our reality, even before we make an attempt to understand or transcend it.  When expectation is present, disappointment is always lurking nearby.  Stephanie Melish says, “Fear is an idea-crippling, experience-crushing, success-stalling inhibitor, inflicted only by yourself”, because it is a choice you make!

Mostly we fear being hurt, rejected, ostracized, and we fear failure, walling our vulnerable selves up so that we do not feel, and suppress our emotions.  My belief is that all “negative” emotions, basically anything that is not of love is rooted in fear, and we either operate from love or fear, and where the one exists, the other cannot.  Very often we reject the person or people who we think threaten us, instead of the action, resulting in the loss of relationships with others, rather we should be learning to transcend our fear based thinking.  When we are walled off, we are separated from our emotions and feelings, and never reach the source of our suffering, the underlying fears and vulnerabilities, continually blaming circumstances or others, thereby remaining stuck in a perpetual cycle of suffering.

If your mind is closed, you cannot learn anything new.  Closed minds reject anything different, anything that conflicts with their beliefs, beliefs that may be false.  Have you forgotten that experience is stronger than belief?  Fear is the force that keeps minds closed, and only an open mind can receive and process new knowledge.

One of the most important of life’s lessons is to learn independence, to understand freedom.  This means independence from attachments, from results, from opinions, and from expectations, because when we learn how to break them; we set ourselves free.  The only test in this great school we call life is; whether we are learning to discharge fear and embrace love.  Holding onto fear poisons our relationships.  My suggestion would be to love, even if the other is angry, hurt, and fearful, love is a constant; fear is transient.  I offer you this poem by Rabindranath Tagore, which illustrates the above statement perfectly, “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high; where knowledge is free; where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls; where words come out from the depth of truth; where tireless striving stretches its arms toward perfection; where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit; where the mind is led forward by Thee into ever-widening thought and action; into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake!”

We are born with a tremendous capacity to receive and give love, to experience pure joy, and to experience the present moment fully.  As children we do not worry about the past or the future, we feel and live spontaneously and completely in the moment, as we were meant to experience this physical dimension.  We must courageously overcome the brainwashing that has caused us so much fear, reclaiming our capacity for love, and for happiness.

During our life, an overlay of fear, anger, envy, sadness, insecurity, and many other negative thoughts and emotions accrues and covers our beautiful inner nature.  This outer covering is intensified and reinforced by our childhood experiences, and we appear to be what we are not – angry and fearful people, filled with insecurity, guilt, and self-doubt.  We have forgotten who we really are, and by rejecting what we fail to understand, we further reinforce this illusion of fear.  Dale Carnegie suggests, “Do the things you fear, and continue to do so. This is the quickest and surest way to victory over all fear”, and I agree, because thinking will not overcome your fear, but action will!

Letting go of fear, anger, and other negative emotions is important for good physical health as well as for spiritual wellbeing.  As we become more aware of our spiritual nature, we recognize our true essence.  We are immortal and divine.  Renouncing violence, hate, dominance, selfishness, and ownership of people and things becomes even easier with this recognition.  Accepting love, compassion, charity, hope, faith, and cooperation becomes the natural thing to do.

Paramahansa Yogananda says, “Man has falsely identified with the pseudo-soul or ego. When he transfers his sense of identity to his true being, the immortal soul, he discovers that all pain is unreal. He no longer can even imagine the state of suffering.” This statement suggest that all fear is based on illusion, whether that is past conditioning or some old belief that no longer serves you.  Fear is nothing more than a false sense of reality, a delusion created by your own mind, and if you are immortal, what do you have to fear?

We are all evolving, some faster than others, but I believe that eventually we will all learn to overcome every negative biological tendency in order to manifest our spiritual nature fully.  Similarly, we can all learn to overcome any negative social or cultural teaching for the same reason.

If you fail to understand the real roots of your fears, and work ceaselessly to weed them out, you will not heal and become whole again.  Once you truly understand your fear and its sources, the fear dissolves, you heart opens again and you feel happiness and love return once more.  Since the beginning of time, all the great teachers of humanity have preached love and compassion in our relationships and in our communities.  Our job is to manifest their teachings, and to practice loving acts in our everyday life.

Love dissolves fear, love is the ultimate answer.  As Buddha said, “Hate does not conquer hate. Hate is conquered by love. This is an eternal law.” Love is not an abstraction but an actual energy, or spectrum of energies, which you can create and maintain in your being.  Just be loving, feel loving, express your love, because you cannot be afraid when you are feeling love, they cannot co-exist.  Love as an energy, is the highest and most pure energy, and at its highest vibrations it possesses both wisdom and awareness.  It is an energy that unites all beings, because love is an absolute and it never ends.  Remember that fear is a poisonous illusion, and love is the only antidote!
