Forgiveness… Probably one of the most difficult actions known to man – of the self and of others. It is a very tender subject, invoking painful memories, emotions and desires in most of us. Everyone has dealt with hurt in life, and most of us have something for which we should ask forgiveness.
“There is a hard law… When an injury is done to us, we never recover until we forgive.” – Alan Paton
The desire and ability to forgive go hand in hand, because it takes a strong person to say that they are sorry and an even stronger person to FORGIVE. Before any forgiveness can take place, one needs to have the desire to want to forgive, and in desiring this, one needs to understand the act of forgiveness, and why gaining the ability to forgive yourself and others is essential to living presently.
We talk about forgiveness, but there is little practice of it. Forgiveness has become a lost art, a philosophical abstraction and sometimes a ‘spiritual bypass’ to avoid doing the work.
Our refusal to forgive hurts us, not our offender and is an added injury we do to ourselves after our initial wounding. Forgiveness can be a problem for many people simply because they are not clear about what forgiveness really is. As human beings it is unnatural for us to forgive, in fact it is a skill we are all capable of learning. It begins with the realization that forgiveness is a series of steps that you take to restore your own peace of mind. Therefore, true forgiveness requires both an emotional and physical release to be complete. That release leads to more love and joy in your life. Embracing and releasing your emotions empowers your soul, by letting go and forgiving, you reclaim your power.
“All suffering is ego-created and is due to resistance.” – Eckhart Tolle
As stated in the Power of Now, “It seems that most people need to experience a great deal of suffering before they will relinquish resistance and accept – before they forgive. As soon as they do, one of the greatest miracles happens; the awakening of Being-consciousness through what appears as evil, the transmutation of suffering into inner peace. The ultimate effect of all the evil and suffering in the world is that it will force humans into realizing who they are beyond name and form. Thus, what we perceive as evil from our limited perspective is actually part of the higher good that has no opposite. This however, does not become true for you except through forgiveness. Until that happens, evil has not been redeemed and therefore remains evil. Through forgiveness, which essentially means recognizing the insubstantiality of the past and allowing the present moment to be as it is, the miracle of transformation happens not only within but also without.”
To this end, it is important to recognize that by having a desire to forgive and the ability to do so, while there might be pain, as long as you have relinquished resistance, underneath the sadness you will feel a deep serenity, a stillness, this is inner peace, the good that has no opposite.
The reason forgiveness is so essential as stated in A Course in Miracles is, “All disease comes from a state of unforgiveness”, because you are at dis-ease with yourself and your life experiences.
Forgiveness heals. Not just yourself, but the person or experience you are so feverishly holding onto, waiting for a miraculous retribution that will never happen. Jack Kornfield really knew what he was talking about when he said “You hold in your hand an invitation: to remember the transforming power of forgiveness and loving kindness.”
So to all we say, forgive everyone for everything, including yourself.
In the days that follow, we will touch more on understanding forgiveness, what it takes to forgive and more importantly, why we should all learn this valuable skill for our own lives. How forgiveness heals and what it enables for us in the end.
Introducing 5 Weeks to Forgiveness by Sonia Choquette
Psychologists generally define forgiveness as a conscious, deliberate decision to release feelings of resentment or vengeance towards others, regardless of whether they actually deserve your forgiveness or not. According to many experts, forgiveness isn’t just for the deeply magnanimous among us; it’s both a choice and a trainable skill. Research suggests that the capacity for forgiveness is an intrinsic part of human nature. I honestly believe that forgiveness is a gift you give yourself.
“Forgiveness is “for giving”, because to forgive yourself and others, is to set a prisoner free and really what you discover is that the prisoner was you.” – Belinda Snyman
